ABSTRACT

In the revised second edition of his An Introduction to the Pronunciation of English (1970) (henceforth IPE2), Gimson introduced in Part III ('The Word and Connected Speech') comprehensive tables of the phonotactic patterns of English phonemes. These tables, retained in the revised third edition (1980) (IPE3), enable foreign and also native speakers of English to see clearly the possibilities and improbabilities of word-formation, of considerable significance in lexicalisation by neologism.
