ABSTRACT

Energy security can be considered in terms of the physical availability of supplies to satisfy demand at a given price. This chapter attempts to analyse the existing energy situation in South Asian states and explores the problems and prospects of regional cooperation in the energy sector and the resultant mutual benefits. It discusses India's energy security scenario, the various gas pipeline proposals to India, and regional initiatives for cooperative efforts in the energy sector. In order to realise these aims, the chapter outlines some of the background to South Asian energy security, and then provides an overview of energy cooperation in South Asia. It reviews scenario for India's energy security along with India's overseas investment. Finally, the chapter discusses bilateral energy cooperation in South Asia. While India can benefit from electricity and gas imports from neighbouring countries to foster its development, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan can also accrue economic benefits from the export of hydroelectric power and natural gas.
