ABSTRACT
The great apes exhibit such extraordinary capacities that a number of thinkers, such as Steven Wise, have proposed that they be given basic legal rights. Linguistic capacities and self-awareness of great apes is discussed by Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and her co-authors in their essay. Their pioneering work with chimpanzees and bonobos has been conducted in a laboratory setting, allowing for carefully controlled observations.
