ABSTRACT

Savage-Rumbaugh and her co-workers summarize recent findings that provide insights into the occurrence of consciousness in nonhuman animals. They view consciousness as a fundamental property of the universe, much like space, time, mass, etc. In particular they present the evidence for consciousness in bonobos and the findings that they are capable of comprehending human speech and employing a lexical communication system. They find that bonobos have first “person” accounts to offer of their lives. They affirm the significant power of culture on biology and as a force in evolution.
