ABSTRACT

Among laws governing use of experimental animals, Orlans identifies eight regulatory dimensions ranging from minimal to extensive protections for laboratory animals; she also reviews and compares the international distribution of animal research laws. Orlans argues that public concerns have led to more stringent protections in recent years. She also believes that this increased regulation has stemmed both from animal rights activities and scientific insights on the intellectual and emotional capabilities of animals.
