ABSTRACT
Representing the publishers of the magazine Scientific American , Scheff argues quite broadly that elephants, orcas, and chimps (and other closely related species) should no longer be held in captivity, citing the unique and complex human-like characteristics of these animals. Examples are given to illustrate their intelligence and complex social systems. The shorter life-spans and psychological damage experienced are also noted.
