ABSTRACT

For decades, shelters have been fighting a battle against companion animal overpopulation, the tragedy of too many puppies and kittens born into a world that cannot provide homes for them all. The statistics, however familiar to many people, are still staggering: a female dog and her puppies are theoretically capable of multiplying to over 67,000 in just six years, and a female cat and her kittens can result in over 400,000 offspring in only seven years.
