ABSTRACT

Introduction to Part Ten Should animals have legal rights? How can the situations of animals be improved? Is civil disobedience morally justified? The authors in this part present widely diverging answers to these questions. In “A Great Shout,” attorney Steven Wise notes that we have assigned ourselves the exalted status of legal persons and consider every other animal as merely legal things which can be owned. Wise argues for fundamental legal rights for the great apes based on their possession of autonomy.
