ABSTRACT

Richard Epstein is unconvinced by the arguments of Wise and others for the personhood of great apes. Animals lack the capacity for higher cognitive language and thought that characterizes human beings as a species. Epstein points out a number of unfortunate consequences which would ensue if we accepted the claims of the animal rights movement. He concludes that it is appropriate for animals to be treated as property.
