ABSTRACT

In his book How Are We To Live? (1995), Peter Singer describes how the collapse of religious traditions has left a void in many people’s lives: “When Sartre realized that life has no meaning, it was a shocking contention. Now, it is simply the normal understanding.” Most Americans wouldn’t agree that life has no meaning, and the vast majority claim to believe in God and a higher purpose. Observing actual behavior, however, one wonders whether people are living lives that can be reconciled with their belief in meaning.
