ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses athlete-outcomes/consequences to justify the recommended coaching-actions and to provide a more complete literature review. It reviews literature from: early recreation sport contexts for children; developmental sport contexts for adolescents; and elite sport focusing on adult populations. Fostering a positive motivational climate has long been a subject of study because a significant responsibility for youth coaches is to make sport intrinsically gratifying in order to promote outcomes such as effort, engagement, and maintenance of participation. Although providing athletes with opportunities to learn technical and tactical skills is a fundamental component of coaching, several studies have indicated how developmental coaches believe their primary role ultimately rests in offering adolescent-aged athletes a sporting experience that is conducive to personal growth. The role of transformational leadership in coaching effectiveness appears to be an important construct, yet we know little about how it is developed in coaches and how it affects athletes.
