ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how coaches' psychological health can be developed or harmed and explores the potential consequences of such processes for coaches and athletes. The chapter presents research on the potential consequences of coaches' well- and ill-being for coaches and athletes with an emphasis on interpersonal processes, which leads into a description of the contagion of well- and ill-being between coaches and athletes. It reviews literature to offer some important implications for how sporting organisations can help coaches flourish. A considerable portion of the research exploring well- and ill-being in athlete and coach populations is grounded within self-determination theory. The coach-based literature discussed has established that coaches, psychological health is related to their interpersonal behavioural styles towards athletes. Hence, coaches themselves need to be aware of how fluctuations in their well- and ill-being may influence how they interact with their athletes at the daily level within a training session, and also more generally.
