ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the research on the prevalence and influence of managerial change to develop and maintain effective athletic performance. It focuses on the influence of managerial change on coaches. The study of organizational psychology in sport refers to an umbrella research agenda focused on examining topics such as attitudes, fairness, motivation, stress, leadership, teams, and broader aspects of organizational and work design in sport. Leadership change is commonly referred to in general management literature as a "succession event". Organizational change in the form of leadership succession has recently received attention as a salient theme within sport psychology literature. The majority of the research examining leadership succession in the sport management and economics domains is based on a fairly straightforward premise that the outgoing leader was performing poorly and change should be related to performance improvements.
