ABSTRACT

Our key intention in this concluding chapter is two-fold. First, to identify and elucidate, on the basis of our understanding of the individual as well as the collective thrust of the various contributions to this volume, some of the key issues which we believe have a long-term bearing on the prospects for realizing maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean. Second, to pinpoint areas/sectors, where sub-regional and regional cooperation is desirable as well as feasible, and to examine the efficacy of the current mandate of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) for achieving sustainability, stability and security in the Indian Ocean.
