ABSTRACT
2.1 Much has been said about Lord Hoffmann’s statement of law relating to the construction of contracts in Investors Compensation Scheme Ltd v West Bromwich Build-ing Society. 1 The statement has been quoted and applied on countless occasions by courts since then, and the general feeling is that it has played a role in changing the traditional parameters adopted for contractual construction. 2
