ABSTRACT
How we propose to understand reality is central to the pursuit of scientific activity, though by no means confined to it. Many lay people would be surprised to discover that the question of what specific characteristics distinguish scientific practice from other human activities has provoked fierce debate amongst scientists. Shortly we will consider some of the main points to emerge from these debates and their relevance for confronting the unusual and mysterious aspects of human experience which form the subject matter of this book.
