ABSTRACT

Cognition is the processing of information by the brain, in order to make sense of the world around us and to deal with it in an effective manner. This involves a number of different cognitive processes, including perception, memory and thinking. None of these processes are infallible, which means that we are all subject to misunderstandings, illusions and misjudgements. However, people differ from one another considerably in their cognitive abilities, and it is possible that those who are more prone to cognitive errors may also be more likely to acquire inaccurate beliefs. One possible example is our ability to make accurate judgements about chance events and coincidences.
