ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of some of the major themes in workplace interpreting, drawing primarily from research on medical and legal settings as illustrative contexts where interpreting frequently occurs. After discussing the myth of verbatim translation, we present some critical issues, focusing on who interpreters are, and how these identities can affect the linguistic practices used. Recent debates surrounding the specific contributions that interpreters should/should not bring into the talk are discussed. The chapter concludes with a description of some of the research methods that have proven effective in examining workplace interpreting, before suggesting possible avenues for future research.
