ABSTRACT

The chapter aims to show how issues of language in the workplace have invested the domain of vocational education. It highlights the growing relevance and usefulness to approach the field of vocational education through socio-cultural linguistics perspectives. In particular, by describing current research on vocational education and training and considering relevant topics, the chapter shows how language use is not a peripheral component of the training curriculum, but rather a central mediating tool for vocational learning. After going through methodological and theoretical issues required when adopting a language in the workplace perspective, the chapter finishes by considering future directions.
