ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the question of how to educate people to contribute to globalization, in regions which face a declining birth rate and an aging society. The case that is introduced here is Gunma University and Gunma Prefecture's "Multicultural Community Advancement Officer" training program that was selected for the "Development of Centers for the Cultivation of Human Resources for Regional Revitalization" Program funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)'s 2009–2014 Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology, Human Resource Development. The perspective of multicultural coexistence is defined as a perspective that promotes building mutually useful complementary relationships that foster sharing between fellow people with different individual characteristics, cultures, and nationalities that are living in the same region. This perspective also attempts to promote the creation of an environment where people see one another as resources that help their participation in economic and social activities in the community.
