ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an exploratory study of a construction organisation in term of its social media implementation and use. It focuses on the types of social media platforms used for personal, business and career development purposes; usage policy of the organisation; level of integration with business goals; significance of social media on various branches of business and barriers in implementation. The chapter presents a case study of a construction organisation to understand social media implementation within the construction context. While interview findings suggest that Twitter is the most used platform for personal use, survey demonstrates that Facebook is used mostly for personal purposes. The case study of a leading construction firm in the UK revealed that the organisation is active in few popular social media platforms including: Blog, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. Facebook and Twitter are the most commonly used platforms by the employees for personal purposes while LinkedIn is mostly used for business purposes and career development.
