ABSTRACT

The Umayyad period constitutes a key moment for the Qurʾan’s history and its codification. This article explores this historical moment through the study of one Qurʾan manuscript, the Codex Amrensis 1. It contextualises Codex Amrensis 1 within the written transmission of the Qurʾan by analysing the manuscript’s formal and textual features. The Codex and related manuscripts shed light on the plurality of different scribal traditions during the Umayyad period and competition between them.
