ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine what we have learned about judicial selection in the states thus far and discuss several promising areas for future research. While we have learned much, there are still fundamental questions that remain unanswered. As state legislatures and interest groups continue to debate the “best” way to select judges, it becomes imperative for scholars to answer questions about the implications of changing institutions and institutional rules, and to make these scholarly findings accessible to interested policy makers and practitioners.
