ABSTRACT
Dr Irit Regev introduced the situation of elderly people in a war zone and the interventions conducted by social workers to help the elderly in Israel. One method she used is the life review method and such an approach is also useful in other stress contexts, such as elderly people living with cancer. In this chapter, we will introduce the stress experienced by elderly patients with cancer and the social work interventions we have conducted among cancer patients in Longhua Hospital, in Shanghai, China. In particular, we focused on strengthening patients’ self-effi cacy via the life review method and building up their social support; the latter is different from the community-based intervention in Regev’s chapter.
