ABSTRACT
The papers collected in this book were originally presented at a conference held at Edinburgh University in June 2014 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the publication of On the Beginning of Social Inquiry (McHugh et al., 1974). Here we seek to provide some sense of what the 1974 book represented and why it seemed right both to celebrate it and now to publish, in considerably revised form, many of the papers from the conference.
