A general theory of the use of technology in sport and some consequences

Sporting events depend on referees and umpires getting decisions right. Prestige and prize money depend on the ability of officials to award points or goals correctly and detect unfair play. In this chapter, we examine the role of tech - nologies in supporting match officials and argue that getting the ‘right’ outcome should be seen as a problem of increasing ‘justice’ rather than increasing ‘accuracy’.
