ABSTRACT
Nursing has a long and distinguished history, but it is only within the last 100 years or so that it has emerged as a distinct profession. The progression of health care in modern times has caused nursing to evolve continually alongside other professional groups, while remaining distinct from them. This chapter considers issues of the place of nursing as a profession in the modern health care system, and is divided into three parts.
