ABSTRACT

This chapter presents current interpretation of the essential conceptual ideas characterising Socio Dynamic counselling. Typical of Vance Peavy's thinking that SocioDynamic counselling was a continuous 'work in progress'. The SocioDynamic approach as a response to social and working life changes is keenly related to contemporary social theories. Congruent with the idea of career counselling as a general method of life-planning, Vance emphasised that the holistic and heuristic nature of the counselling process also calls forth a different idea of counselling methods. The employment counsellor here uses dialogical listening at her visit to a small business. The idea of life-space mapping is to make the client's life as a whole visible and to enable the client to work with it. The Polish counsellors also provided feedback that the SocioDynamic approach had made some of them think differently on their own life and appreciate career counselling more as a distinct field of counselling.
