ABSTRACT

This chapter considers career counselling through the metaphor of working with storytellers. Attention will also be given to the use of metaphor in career counselling. Practical suggestions for working with story in career counselling will be proposed. Constructivist career counsellors may tell stories about their work that may be different from those told by career counsellors operating out of the logical positivist worldview. The metaphor of working with storytellers represents a very apt image of contemporary career counselling and reflects a shift away from the dominant 'test and tell' metaphor. Story and metaphor provide exciting and interesting teaching opportunities for those working in counsellor education settings. The use of story and metaphor provides a rich source of meaning and possibility in career counselling. A challenge for career counsellors is to understand the stories and metaphors that describe career counselling and to construct their own.
