ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief history of qualitative career assessment as a story that may have been largely silenced or overshadowed for many years. It examines the advantages of qualitative career assessment and considerations for its use in career counselling. Through qualitative career assessment processes, clients subjectively reflect on their intra- and inter-personal contexts in an idiographic process that reveals their uniqueness; it provides 'rich avenues to explore client meanings, themes, and preferences as unique, personal and distinctive'. This chapter focuses on qualitative career assessment, the history and valuable contribution of quantitative career assessment cannot be overlooked. The potential of qualitative career assessment to aid the work of career counsellors is gradually being realised. The chapter provides the practical application of the qualitative career assessment that could be used by the counsellor educators or practitioners.
