ABSTRACT

Assessment has been integral to the work of career counsellors since the profession originated in the early 1900s with the work of Parsons (1909). Designed to assist individuals with career exploration and self-exploration (de Bruin and de Bruin, 2006) and with decision-making (Sampson, 2009), assessment has largely determined the structure of the career counselling process and the roles assumed by counsellors and clients. Quantitative instruments have dominated career assessment and career counselling has traditionally been depicted as a linear process structured around assessment as a preliminary activity.
