ABSTRACT

Since childhood, one of my favorite technologies in sport communication has been the ‘telestrator’—the device allowing broadcasters and color commentators to draw sketches over still or moving images, such as instant replays in sport games. The first time I noticed the technology was during TV broadcasts of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) games in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Watching the wizardry of Magic Johnson was entertaining in itself; yet seeing replays with graphic highlighting of his imaginative passes allowed a fuller appreciation of Magic’s vision of play and made those games even more enjoyable.
