ABSTRACT
This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part examines the practice of and challenges to moral and civic education in Asia. It illustrates the transformation of Asian moral and civic education in an increasingly globalized, culturally diverse world. The part explores the theories and practice of moral education in this region. It presents the debate as to whether mandating this kind of moral education is effective. The part focuses on the transformation of the national moral and civic education under the impacts of different forces, including globalization, multiculturalism and human rights. It also discusses the tensions in addressing the challenges of cultural heterogeneity at the level of the nation-state and developing citizenship education from a multicultural perspective. The part presents a powerful question on how our schools really prepare the young people to participate in the public political life.
