ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part provides teacher educators with insights into ways to facilitate student-teacher professional learning. It aims to alert teacher educators to the decline in teacher motivation as student-teachers progress through their programmes. The part demonstrates that teacher educators support their students as they build a realistic picture of teaching, rather than idealizing the profession. It also demonstrates that interpersonal support and sharing with experienced teachers at different stages of their career, which can inform student-teachers of how they may overcome challenges in their professional career. The part discusses the use of video and photos to facilitate student-teachers' reflection on their practice. It explains the challenges which student-teachers face during their field experience, and also provides a number of suggestions for teacher education programmes. The part describes the need to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the participating parties during the field experience.
