ABSTRACT

Elections, impressing voters and voting were significant in Turkish political life. Turkey transitioned to a multi-party system beginning with the 1946 elections. Three kinds of election co-exist in Turkey; parliamentary, presidential and local elections. Turkey utilizes proportional representation, with the addition of an election threshold per party. Apart from this countrywide 10% vote rate threshold on a party basis, there are no additional thresholds on the city or election-district level. To better understand the dynamics of the June 2015 and November 2015 elections, and the atmosphere of electoral advertising they exhibited, it is necessary to briefly revisit the election of December 1995. The use of information technology has been gaining momentum in Turkey, paralleling the global trends, as the data gathered by the Turkish Statistical Institute reveals. A report from TNS market research company rates the use of smartphones in Turkey at 13% in 2012, 34% in 2013, and up to 55.5% in 2015.
