ABSTRACT

This chapter describes political and electoral systems and summarizes regulations for political advertising and presents a general view of political advertising in Colombia. Colombia has been recognized as one of the most stable Latin American democracies. A new era in Colombian democracy started with the 1991 Constitution. The charter reorganized the state structure and promoted a more competitive political system. Colombia is a presidential system in which the executive is both chief of state and government. Political advertising in Colombia is regulated by the 1991 Constitution, various pieces of legislation that deal with electoral processes and political parties, and rulings of the National Electoral Council. Regarding content Colombian regulations on political advertising establish that parties and candidates are banned from using in their ads national symbols and its colors, other parties’ logos. The chapter shows that the figure of former president Alvaro Uribe, and the narratives of war and peace were the driving forces of political advertising in elections.
