ABSTRACT

Black Acting Methods seeks to honor and rightfully identify Blacks as central co-creators of acting and directing theory by filling the perceived void of Black acting theorists. It uplifts honor, and provides culturally relevant frameworks for Black people who are pursuing careers in acting, and provides diverse methodologies for actors and teachers of all races and cultures to utilize, and it highlights performance practitioners’ labor in social justice issues and activism. Though acting and directing are often listed as separate fields, they operate as artistic siblings, as directors have to understand acting to work with actors, and actors often direct themselves. In reference to Black acting methods, ritual signifies a connection between the material world and the spiritual world. Rituals are recursive patterns and actions embedded in acting spaces that enact processes and methods, often moving toward product, which is never fixed.
