ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the pedagogy of walking as designed at Barambah Environmental Education Centre. The key pedagogy at Barambah provides experiential learning mediated by the bodily rhythm of walking with others, becoming physically immersed in particular places. The idea of walking-talking pedagogy evolved from a discussion that occurred one day when walking with a group of disengaged Year 9 boys. Walking is integral to Barambah programs; walking connects students to the culture of the Traditional Owners, walking allows time to become immersed in the natural environment, walking enhances well-being and walking gets students to where they are going. Walking is integral to every Barambah experience and takes varied and diverse forms depending on the purpose of the walk and the terrain being traversed. Walking hard has aesthetic and fitness implications and creates a strong sense of achievement and joy for the students when they crest the final rise.
