ABSTRACT

Mixed-use is widely seen as an integral component of the compact city ideology, providing different functions and activities in close proximity, while creating vibrant and exciting cities that are used throughout the day. Mixed-use can contribute to greater city vitality and security. Mono-functional districts and buildings are often only used for short periods of the day: office in the daytime and residential in the early morning and evening. While the mixed-use tall building is a well-established typology, there are growing opportunities for emerging skyscraper programmes in increasingly vertical cities. They include dramatic ideas such as vertical schools and universities, vertical agriculture and farming and even vertical cemeteries that require a totally new way of thinking and designing high-rise architecture. There is a compelling case that mixed-use tall buildings can provide environmental, social and economic benefits to the city.
