ABSTRACT
Robert M. Solow’s Richard T. Ely Lecture seems almost as fresh today as when Bob explained these views to us as young graduate students in 1974. Now, as then, everyone has oil on the brain (though Bob has famously said that everything reminds him of sex). There are many similarities between these years and those, and, perhaps, that accounts for the timeliness of his Lecture.
