ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the notion of ‘the multilingual university”, which has gained increased attention over the last two decades. It explores existing theories on the multilingual university and core issues, topics and new debates and directions. Poststructuralist linguistic theories are used to critique the different conceptualizations of the multilingual university and to present models that do justice to a local (and more global) linguistic diversity on the ground. As multilingual universities are situated and operate differently in different contexts, the chapter concludes with a case study of a South African university
