ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a material analysis of linked location-based photographs by looking at their mode of navigational practice and form of production. The published photographs superscribed with arrows can also be understood as such pre-consumer annotations, revealing the intermediary and ephemeral status of the routes they set forth. The actor network theory included a mediation theory developed by Bruno Latour that can be used as a basis for the analysis of navigation practices with the aid of photo-auto guides. All photo-auto guides are structured in more or less the same way. The front section features a photographic run of the outbound journey, with a numbered photographic run in the back section for the return journey. A process of abstraction can be diagnosed that highlights the information regarded as important to navigational practice. Individual central locations are given particular emphasis and appear at a larger scale than the scale corresponding to the topography.
