ABSTRACT
This chapter gives consideration to how and why this particular kind of imaginative process, or what the author term here noticing strategies, happens. The skill photographers most appreciate in the work of others is not just the ability to capture a picturesque landscape or portrait, but to see something where they have not seen anything and create a photographic opportunity through noticing alone. Noticing also has a role to play as this part of this navigation strategy. The pages that they navigated around were, of course, deeply familiar to them and they revisited the same places on Flickr in a similar way to their favourite urban sites. The focused inattentiveness of the urbanites is one part of their natural attitude, like the noise, dirt and architecture which inform their everyday life. The process of watching also becomes involved in the spontaneous planning of a picture, an evolving process between body, imagination and vision.
