ABSTRACT
Self-report questionnaires (SRQ) have long been the most common method used to assess self-regulated learning (SRL). This chapter provides a working definition of SRQ and identifies strengths associated with this type of assessment. Next, it also provides recommendations relevant to both researchers and practitioners for using SRQ to assess SRL. Then, the chapter reviews the various types of validity evidence and discusses the application of each when using SRQ to assess SRL. Given the many potential benefits of using SRQ, it is perhaps a foregone conclusion that they will continue to be a common method used to assess SRL. The challenge ahead, therefore, is to ensure that SRQ are used responsibly, in ways that continue to build evidence of their validity. Furthermore, the chapter identifies recommendations for theoretical and applied research using SRQ to assess SRL that are designed to help achieve this goal.
