ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on how some high-attaining young people use an asynchronous web-board, AskNRICH, to engage with and pursue serious mathematical study beyond their own school classrooms. Through their participation in AskNRICH these gifted learners are able to communicate and 'meet' with like-minded peers from anywhere in the world; the web-board presents the means by which its users, affectionately known as the AskNRICHers, can connect with other gifted and talented students of mathematics of varying levels of experience and expertise to experience multiple high-quality interactions. The chapter outlines the research undertaken, reporting on findings that describe its users. Two examples of the opportunities for fulfilment and engagement in, and extension to, the subject are then presented. The first focuses on an individual's progress on a topic, the second narrates the conversations and interactions amongst a group of AskNRICHers.
