ABSTRACT

Sex stores can be found in many communities across America. These stores are not standardized or regulated, but have several features in common. Sex stores may sell pornographic media, sex toys and novelties, sexual accessories and devices, and sexually charged humor items. The Supreme Court, through a series of first amendment cases, legalized sex stores in the 1960s. These early sex stores (since the 1960s) catered almost entirely to male clientele and often had pornographic video viewing rooms on the premises. They were designed without windows so customers would not be seen. Such stores often had a reputation for being taboo, dirty, and a menace to the community. As time progressed, sex stores have diversified, both in terms of their atmosphere and their audience. Now, several different sorts of sex stores operate across the country, each catering to different pleasure needs and potentials.
