ABSTRACT

Think about the last time you filled out a government form, maybe your college applications, your college applications, your financial aid forms, or a driver’s license application. Likely you had to answer whether you were female or male (or woman or man, depending on the form). Did you question whether your gender was relevant to what you were applying for? For example, under current law in the U.S. both men and women are eligible to vote, but in some places the voter registration card asks for your gender. We take for granted that gender matters because gender, and the idea that there are two complimentary genders, is everywhere.
