ABSTRACT

This design case describes IND3217 Studio I, the first fully “interior design”-oriented studio that undergraduate students in the interior design program take. As the instructor of this course, I have come to see it not only as a foundation skill-building course, but also an introduction to the idea of experience. With a design of any kind, including interior design, human experience is an unavoidable factor that pervades both the process and final outcome of a project. By this I mean several things: first, a designer cannot help but have a personal experience with a project as they gather its facts, wrestle with competing influences, and ultimately reach a solution for its intended users. Secondly, and perhaps as importantly, a designer must also be sensitive to the fact that the solution’s intended users will also have an experience with the project’s constructed outcome. Ideally, this client experience is one that is anticipated and accommodated by the designer.
