ABSTRACT

We teach the design of educational multimedia at the University of Georgia (UGA) in a special group of four courses that we collectively call the Studio curriculum, or just simply the Studio (Clinton and Rieber 2010). This Studio began in 1998 after about two years of planning. The catalyst for creating the Studio was the conversion of a quarter-based calendar to a semester-based calendar at the University of Georgia in 1998. University of Georgia administration strongly encouraged programs not to simply “convert” all 5-quarter courses to 3-semester courses. Instead, programs were asked to engage in reflection on our curricula and to consider ways to revise and improve our teaching. Programs had several years to plan for and implement this conversion.
