ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the retro of packaged paradise escape, the packaged escape of a retro paradise, and the paradise of packaged retroscape: Hawaii, soft, warm, vibratingly fertile and undulating call lure to the ultimate retro-escape. The project of collecting Hawaiian records and the accompanying images that began as they ironically decorated the northern Michigan cabin has allowed to study Hawaii as a retroscape and to reflect upon the work of creating own retro-escape. They have found that in own attempts to shape an environment in which to entertain friends, love, and write they surrounded themselves with images, sounds, and performative and reflexive identities that provided the foundation for analytic and scholarly work, as passion turned into professional pursuit. In this sense ritual performance of domesticity produced and formed the personal retroscape-complete with soundtrack-the fruits of which they have spun out in the proceeding narrative.
